Our
Story

Daughters of Eve Foundation Uganda (DOEFU) was established in September 2022 with the mission of supporting vulnerable women and girls in Uganda. The organization began its work in Mayuge District, specifically focusing on communities affected by the implementation of stringent fishing regulations in the local fishing industry on Lake Victoria. These regulations led to severe economic hardship for families already struggling to make ends meet.

The foundation's first offices and advocacy centre were set up in Bukoba Beach, from where it extended its reach to surrounding communities. DOEFU's initial projects centered on critical areas such as maternal health, ending violence against women, supporting widows, promoting menstrual health and hygiene, and providing skills training. Over the course of its first two years, the organization has made significant strides, including distributing over 350 Mama Kits, providing essential items such as new beds, mattresses, bedding, and water tanks to 30 widows, and offering monthly food packages and water to 12 widows in need. Additionally, 30 workshops addressing violence against women were conducted, and 250 adolescent girls were provided with reusable sanitary pads.

In the area of skills training, DOEFU has empowered 50 women with vocational skills in fish farming, eco-friendly briquette making, tailoring, and baking.

In December 2024, the foundation expanded its operations into Buikwe District, establishing a presence in both Njeru and Nyenga. A full-service advocacy centre is set to open in Njeru in February 2025, offering women and girls a comprehensive range of services, including support, guidance, counselling, and advocacy. The centre will provide maternal health services and referrals, legal advice, and both individual and group counselling.

Our founder and International Director, Lisa Marie Mathieson, has over 30 years of experience in supporting, counselling, and advocating for the rights of women and girls worldwide. A domestic and sexual violence counsellor and advocate, Lisa Marie has worked with women and girls in various countries and is deeply committed to advancing their rights. She leads the initiatives in Uganda with a passion for empowering women and girls, working to bring lasting change to their lives and improve their treatment and support, both in Uganda and beyond.
